Short answer: an activewear shrinkage result is only meaningful when the product, measurement points, wash procedure, drying procedure, cycle count, conditioning, calculation and pass rule are all identified. Under a common ISO route, ISO 3759 prepares, marks and measures the specimen, ISO 6330 provides the selected domestic washing and drying procedure, and ISO 5077 determines dimensional change after that treatment. These are connected references, not three interchangeable “shrink tests.”
Also keep linear shrinkage or growth, garment fit, seam or panel distortion, spirality, and overall wash appearance as separate decisions. A fabric report does not automatically approve a finished legging, sports bra or jacket.

Define the commercial failure before choosing the method
“Test shrinkage” is not a complete request. A buyer may actually be trying to prevent several different failures:
- a crop top becomes too short after tumble drying;
- a high-rise legging loses inseam length or waistband height;
- a sports-bra underband becomes tighter while the body grows;
- one jersey leg rotates because knitted spirality develops after washing;
- contrast panels change differently and pull the garment off balance;
- a heat-transfer logo puckers because the film and fabric move differently;
- a fleece surface mats even though length and width remain within tolerance;
- a care label claims tumble drying although the approved sample was line dried.
Write the decision in operational language before sampling:

That instruction connects the claimed product state to the test evidence and prevents a laboratory percentage from being separated from its conditions.

ISO 6330:2021 lists multiple Type A, B and C washing-machine procedures and six drying methods: line, line drip, flat, flat drip, flat press and tumble drying. The public scope states that each procedure represents one wash, and a complete test consists of a selected washing procedure followed by a selected drying procedure. “Wash according to ISO 6330” is therefore incomplete until the exact machine route, program, detergent, drying method and repetition count are named.
Standards are revised. A purchase order, tech pack or lab request should name the edition actually required by the buyer, retailer or destination market. The current licensed standard and laboratory protocol control specimen preparation, apparatus, loading, measurement, calculation and reporting; this guide does not replace them.
Fabric, garment, fit, appearance and spirality are separate evidence layers
Fabric dimensional change
Fabric testing helps qualify a material before cutting. It can reveal length or width instability associated with knitting/weaving, relaxation, heat setting, dyeing, finishing or care exposure. Test the finished production-intent material, not only greige fabric or an early handloom.

Record direction. Wales and courses in a knit, or warp and weft in a woven, can change differently. A single averaged number hides that directional behaviour. Color, print, brushing, coating, compacting and finish can also create different risk states.
Finished-garment dimensional change
A garment combines materials and process history. Sewing thread, elastic, cups, binding, mesh, rib, lining, bonded film and heat-transfer decoration can respond differently from the shell fabric. Cutting direction, seam feeding, pressing and assembly tension can introduce distortion that did not exist in the flat fabric.
For this reason, a passing fabric report should not be rewritten as “the garment will not shrink.” Measure a representative production-intent garment at controlled points before and after the agreed care sequence.
Fit after laundering
Dimensional percentages do not fully predict fit. A small change at a waistband, underband or armhole can matter more than the same percentage on a loose hem. Elastane recovery, compression, seam extension and pattern ease also affect how the product wears.
Use the activewear size grading and fit approval checklist to keep pattern measurements, grade rules, garment tolerances, movement fit and post-care change as linked but separate approvals.

Spirality, torque and skew
Linear length and width can remain acceptable while a side seam rotates. Knitted loop geometry, yarn twist, finishing, cutting grain and panel construction can contribute. ISO 16322-3 covers garment spirality after domestic laundering; AATCC TM179 covers skew change in fabric after home laundering. Select the route that matches the failure and specimen.
Do not compare results obtained with different wash or measurement procedures as if they were one scale. Photograph and measure alignment before care as well as after care so an as-manufactured cutting problem is not mislabelled as laundering-induced spirality.
Wash appearance
Dimensional stability does not approve pilling, fuzzing, matting, color change, seam puckering, crease retention or component damage. ISO 15487 provides a separate appearance route after domestic washing and drying. The official ISO page currently marks the published edition for revision, so the buyer and laboratory should confirm which edition applies.

How to calculate and interpret dimensional change safely
A commonly used general expression is:
Dimensional change (%) = (measurement after treatment − original measurement) ÷ original measurement × 100
With that convention, a negative value usually represents shrinkage and a positive value growth. However, a report may use another convention or present “shrinkage” as a positive magnitude. Never approve or reject a result until the report defines its formula and sign. Follow the exact calculation and rounding rules in the licensed method.
Example for explanation only: if a marked length changes from 500 mm to 490 mm, the expression above gives (490 − 500) ÷ 500 × 100 = −2%. That does not prove a universal pass. The decision still depends on the named product, point, direction, procedure, cycles and pre-agreed limit.

Report original and after-care measurements as well as the calculated percentage. That allows the buyer to audit the calculation and understand whether the same percentage creates a commercially important millimetre change at a critical point.
There is no universal 3% or 5% activewear limit
Many sourcing conversations repeat “3%” or “5%” without identifying whether the number applies to fabric length, fabric width, garment body length, a circumference, one cycle, multiple cycles, line drying or tumble drying. Those numbers are not universal product laws.
A buyer, retailer or test protocol may set its own limit. Set it before the result is known and record:
- product and intended care claim;
- fabric or garment specimen;
- style, size, color, finish and revision;
- every measurement direction or POM;
- exact wash/dry procedure and cycles;
- conditioning/rest and measurement tension;
- individual-value or average decision rule;
- limit for shrinkage, growth, spirality and appearance where applicable;
- retest, corrective-action and release authority.
Product context matters. A relaxed sweatshirt body, compression waistband, sports-bra underband, bonded pocket opening and fitted sleeve should not inherit one unexplained limit. The buyer can use a retailer protocol, destination requirement, approved benchmark or validated internal specification, but the source and scope must remain attached to the number.
Wash route, drying route and cycle count can change the conclusion
Tumble drying can add mechanical and thermal exposure that differs from line or flat drying. A low-temperature machine program differs from another wash program. Detergent, ballast/load, machine type and drying endpoint also matter. Results generated under different routes are not automatically comparable.
ISO 6330 states that one listed procedure represents one wash. If a commercial requirement is “after five washes,” record five repetitions of the agreed washing-and-drying sequence or the exact buyer protocol. Report interim checkpoints if required. Do not describe one accelerated treatment as five home washes unless the applicable method and buyer protocol explicitly support that interpretation.
When the same care route is used to support an odor-control durability claim, use the activewear anti-odor testing guide and repeat the same applicable odor or antibacterial method after the named pretreatment. Dimensional stability and odor-control durability remain separate results.
The care label and test route must be reconciled. A sample approved only after flat drying does not support a tumble-dry promise. Conversely, a harsh comparison route should not silently replace the intended care instruction. ISO 23231:2025 is an accelerated fabric method, but its public scope says it is not intended for developing care labels.
Condition, rest and measure without accidental tension
Textiles can change during washing and then relax after drying. Moisture state, temperature, time after removal, folding and handling can influence measurement. Stretch activewear is especially sensitive to unintended tension.
Use the conditioning and rest requirements of the selected standard or buyer protocol. Mark stable landmarks before treatment where required. Lay or hang the product in the specified state, align it without pulling, use the controlled POM definition and record when the measurement was taken.

Flare leggings need extra waist-to-floor controls because length change and rotation can create dragging or an uneven silhouette. - drying method, setting, endpoint and sequence;

- calculation, sign convention, rounding and reported direction;
- pre-agreed shrinkage, growth, spirality and appearance limits kept separate;

Place this information in the activewear tech pack checklist and purchase-order testing section. “Pre-shrunk” or “wash tested” without a method, specimen, result and scope is not a usable production specification.
Use TikTok and Instagram wash content as a question source, not proof
TikTok’s official Creative Center Trends lets teams review platform trends by industry, timeframe and region, including related content and audience signals. Instagram’s official Insights reports content/account metrics such as views, reach and interactions for eligible professional accounts.
These tools can surface repeated buyer language: “shrunk after one wash,” “waistband warped,” “side seam twisted,” “kept its shape” or before/after wash demonstrations. Convert those comments into controlled product questions before changing a specification.
