Short answer: do not release activewear fabric to cutting because a roll label, one swatch or a verbal “four-point pass” looks acceptable. Lock the material specification and roll manifest; use an agreed visual grading system; check length, usable width, GSM, shade and bow/skew where relevant; map and quarantine affected sections; close risk-specific tests; then issue a traceable hold, conditional release or release decision by roll. A fabric inspection result is not a finished-garment AQL result and does not prove every performance property.

Fabric inspection, fabric testing and garment AQL answer different questions
The three controls can support one production-release decision, but they are not substitutes.

The current ISO 2859-1:2026 supplies lot-by-lot attribute-sampling schemes indexed by AQL. It does not supply a universal fabric-roll point table. Use the AQL 2.5 activewear inspection guide for finished-garment lot decisions and this guide for material control before cutting.
What “4-point fabric inspection” must specify
ASTM D5430-26 is the active ASTM standard for visually inspecting and grading fabrics. ASTM says it may be used for individual rolls and shipments when purchaser and seller agree. It also warns that penalty points can vary considerably between its options, so the same point-assignment option should be used when buyer and supplier results are compared.
That creates an important sourcing rule:
There is no universal 40-points-per-100-square-yards activewear pass rule.
A buyer may commercially choose a four-point grading option and a normalized limit, but the order must state the exact controlled system. Do not write only “4-point inspection, standard quality.” The parties still need to agree:

This guide does not reproduce ASTM’s licensed point-assignment tables. Obtain and use the current licensed standard or the buyer’s controlled manual. A supplier-created spreadsheet is not enough if its scoring rules, units and limits are missing.
Build the roll manifest before inspection begins
An inspection report cannot be traceable if the shipment identity is incomplete. Reconcile the purchase order, packing list, mill/dyehouse records, roll tickets and received material before the fabric reaches the inspection frame.

Give each physical roll one scannable or legible identity that remains connected to the report after the outer packaging is removed. If a ticket is missing or conflicts with the manifest, hold the roll until identity is resolved; do not create a convenient new number without an audit trail.
Choose inspection coverage without inventing a universal percentage
“Inspect 10% of the rolls” and “inspect every roll” are business decisions, not universal textile laws. The correct plan depends on buyer rules, supplier history, material risk, lot structure, order value, inspection capability and what inference the buyer expects to make.

If defects or measurement failures are found, the escalation rule should already say whether to inspect more rolls, expand to all rolls, re-test, segregate a dye lot or stop cutting. Do not decide coverage after seeing whether the first result is convenient.
“100% visually inspected” does not mean “100% laboratory tested.” A machine can expose the fabric face throughout a roll while GSM, shrinkage, composition or colorfastness is measured only on defined specimens. Report those scopes separately.
Activewear fabric defect map
The defect code list should match the actual material. A circular-knit legging interlock, lightweight mesh, brushed fleece, seamless tube, coated woven and printed cycling fabric do not present the same risks.

For each defect event, record the roll, distance from the roll head, direction/location across the width, size or extent, code, assigned result under the agreed method, photograph if needed and cut/hold action. A final roll score without a location map gives the cutting room no way to isolate the loss.
Record serious, repeating and continuous defects separately
Normalized points can hide a defect whose business impact is greater than its arithmetic share. Write overlay rules for at least these situations:

A point limit is not permission to cut through buyer-defined serious defects. Conversely, do not call every cosmetic variation “critical” without a written defect class and product impact; that makes supplier and buyer results impossible to reproduce.
Measure roll length and reconcile shortages
ASTM D3773/D3773M-10(2024) covers four options for measuring the length of woven fabric in full rolls or bolts. ISO 22198:2006 remains current after confirmation in 2023 and addresses width and length of relaxed textile fabrics up to its stated scope, but it excludes coated fabrics and does not determine defects.
Method scope matters. Do not cite a woven-fabric method as universal proof for a knitted or coated activewear roll. For each order, record:
- ticket length, unit and supplier declaration;
- measurement method, equipment and calibration/check state;
- whether length was measured under tension or in the method’s required relaxed condition;
- actual result and tolerance;
- unusable marked/removed length;
- net cuttable length used for consumption reconciliation;
- shortage, replacement, debit or yield disposition.
Gross received length and usable cut length answer different commercial questions. If two metres are removed around a serious full-width defect, do not silently keep them in the “available” quantity.
Total width is not usable width
ASTM D3774-18(2024) covers width of woven or knitted fabrics and can measure full rolls, bolts or short specimens. Its scope distinguishes fabric width, usable width or both. That distinction matters directly to marker efficiency.

If actual usable width is narrower than the marker assumption, the factory may need more fabric, a new marker or different panel allocation. Cutting first and explaining consumption later is not a control plan.
GSM: identify specimen, location, conditioning and method
ASTM D3776/D3776M-20(2025) covers mass per unit area of fabric using several options. ASTM notes that results from a small swatch apply to that sample and do not necessarily represent the lot. The activewear GSM and stretch guide explains why weight does not prove opacity, recovery, support or durability.
For a roll-release report, write more than “GSM OK”:

ASTM D1776/D1776M-20(2024) provides a conditioning/testing practice for textiles where a test method requires it. ISO 139:2005, confirmed in 2025 with its amendment, specifies standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing physical and mechanical textile properties. Use the atmosphere required by the selected method; do not compare a damp receiving-floor reading with a conditioned laboratory result as if they were equivalent.
Shade control: within roll, between rolls and against the approved target
Fabric shade needs at least three distinct decisions:

AATCC EP9-2025 provides principles and a procedure for visual color-difference evaluation of textile specimens against a standard. ISO 105-J03:2009 addresses calculation of color difference between specimens measured under the same conditions. Neither creates one universal activewear color tolerance.
The buyer’s control file should identify the physical reference, material face and orientation, viewing setup, visual and/or instrumental method, formula/settings where applicable, specimen preparation, tolerance and decision authority. Use the Pantone, lab dip and bulk shade guide for the complete approval chain.
Practical roll segregation often needs a shade-group code. That code should follow the actual comparison result, not replace it. Do not mix two dye lots because both tickets say “black,” and do not approve a shade from phone photographs alone.
Bow and skew can become garment twist
ASTM D3882-08(2025) covers bow and skew of filling yarns in woven fabric, courses in knitted fabric and distorted printed geometric designs. ASTM notes that manufacturing, dyeing, tentering or finishing can induce bow/skew and that it may cause problems in sewing and finished-garment appearance.

Record method, specimen/roll location, fabric direction, maximum result where the standard/order requires it, average only when contractually relevant, and limit. Do not average one severe local distortion into an apparently acceptable roll without reviewing its marker impact.
Map rolls to markers, bundles and garments
The most useful inspection outcome is not a PDF stored after production. It is a cutting allocation that preserves roll, shade and defect traceability.

If the factory uses automatic defect capture or marker integration, still verify what the software records, who confirms the event and how a failed sensor/manual override is audited. Technology does not define the buyer’s acceptance standard.
Add risk-specific tests before cut release
Visual grading cannot prove performance. Select tests from the product claim, fabric, finish, color, construction, destination and failure risk.

The test report should identify the specimen and lot it represents. “Passed before” is not enough when color, finish, supplier, article, process or method has changed.
Social and emerging-brand signals change the risk matrix, not the inspection result
TikTok and Instagram are useful for finding current product directions. TikTok’s official Trends tool lets users filter hashtag trends by industry and time frame and view regional/audience information. Instagram says Insights can show content reach, interactions and audience trends for professional accounts. Those signals can help decide what to sample, but reach, views, saves, comments and retail descriptions do not prove roll inspection, fabric identity, shade consistency, defect rate, test performance, conversion or demand.

The final decision is not “did the supplier say four-point passed?” It is which identified rolls can be cut into which product components under which agreed evidence, exclusions and traceability controls.
For coated or laminated running-jacket materials, visual roll grading does not approve DWR, hydrostatic resistance, air/vapour behavior, coating adhesion or the installed jacket.
