Short answer: do not approve activewear color from a name, HEX value, screenshot or Pantone code alone. Identify the exact fabric and application, use an agreed current physical target, approve a traceable lab dip under defined viewing and measurement conditions, retain the approved reference, then control the bulk shade lot before cutting. Ready Styles use offered standard colors; a new color belongs in Full Custom from 200 pieces per color and style.
Color approval is a chain of evidence, not a message that says “make it a little warmer.” This guide helps an overseas buyer turn a trend or design color into a controlled activewear production instruction without claiming that one code, one screen or one numerical tolerance solves every material and end use.
Start by choosing the correct sourcing route

That formula does not create a new color. If you select a standard black and standard navy from the current files, the combination math applies to those offered options. If you request a new burgundy, digital color or Pantone target, the project moves to custom review.

A digital color is direction, not a production standard
An RGB or HEX value describes a digital display instruction. What a buyer sees depends on the screen, brightness, color profile, ambient light, software and image compression. A camera adds another capture and processing chain. Dyed fabric is a physical surface whose appearance depends on fiber, yarn, knit or weave, texture, luster, dye class, finish, heat setting, moisture and viewing light.
Pantone itself warns on its online color pages that the displayed colors are computer simulations and may not match Pantone-identified standards; it tells users to consult physical Pantone publications before use. A phone screenshot of a TikTok set can therefore communicate “muted blue-green” as inspiration, but it cannot authorize a bulk dye recipe.

Never use an eyedropper to extract a HEX value from a compressed image and call the result the original brand’s production color. Apart from technical unreliability, another company’s distinctive product presentation, artwork and protected design should not be copied.
Choose the complete Pantone reference, not only the number
Pantone’s official Color Systems Explained identifies the Fashion, Home + Interiors (FHI) system for apparel, fabrics and soft goods. Pantone says TCX references textiles, while TPG references pigments and coatings. Its FHI help center also explains the physical cotton and paper formats and cautions users to conduct approvals consistently from the selected version.
For activewear, write:
- the complete color number and suffix;
- the Pantone system and physical product/edition used;
- the condition and owner of the physical reference;
- the exact fabric, finish and application to be matched;
- whether the Pantone reference is only the initial target or remains part of the final comparison set;
- the lab dip or physical swatch that becomes the approved production control.
A TCX cotton swatch is a useful textile target, but nylon/elastane interlock, polyester rib and brushed fabric do not become cotton. Their fiber, surface and dye process can change how the same target appears. Approve the intended production substrate instead of assuming that identical codes guarantee identical visual results across materials.
Do not silently shorten 18-xxxx TCX to a number, replace TCX with TPG, use a screen simulation, or switch to an old physical guide without recording the change. Handling, light and aging can also affect physical references, so identify the reference used and protect the approved cutting from contamination, fading and unrecorded borrowing.
The seven-stage activewear color approval chain

The stages are not interchangeable. A lab dip proves neither garment fit nor bulk-lot uniformity. A PP sample made from one approved material cutting does not automatically approve a later bulk lot. A final inspection can detect a shade problem, but discovering it after every garment is sewn is more expensive than controlling the material before cutting.

Put this data in the tech pack, material sheet or controlled color attachment. Do not scatter the target across image filenames and chat messages.

If one field does not apply, mark it intentionally. A blank “Delta E” line can be more dangerous than no instrumental requirement because two parties may use different formulas and assume their numbers are comparable.
How to review a lab dip
“Lab dip” is the operational name for a small dyed-material submission used to evaluate a proposed color before bulk dyeing. Suppliers commonly provide multiple options, but there is no universal rule that three options or one approval round is always correct.
Confirm identity before looking at color
The card or record should show:
- style/program and buyer color name/code;
- complete target reference;
- exact fabric code, fiber, construction and finish;
- mill/dye supplier and submission round;
- option identity such as A, B or C;
- date and recipe/reference identifier where controlled;
- declared difference from production material or process;
- spaces for visual, instrumental and final approval status.
If three swatches arrive without stable labels, do not refer to “the middle one” in a message. Mark and photograph the exact option, return or retain the physical control as agreed, and issue one dated decision.
Compare like with like
Compare the specimen and standard at the same orientation, layer count and relevant condition. Texture, backing and substrate can influence perception. Review the fabric face and any garment state that changes the buying experience, such as stretch over the body, double layers, mesh over main fabric, lining show-through, brushing direction or a wet-use condition.
Those garment checks do not replace the formal shade target. Record them as separate product observations so an opacity or lining issue is not misreported as a dye mismatch.
Use a clear disposition

Do not approve “A with a little less blue.” Option A is either the control or it is not. A verbal modification creates a new unsubmitted color.
Standardize visual appraisal
The official ASTM D1729-22 practice covers visual appraisal of colors and color differences for diffusely illuminated opaque materials. ASTM notes that instrumental measurement is widely used but color matches are also checked visually, and that standardized visual examination improves consistency. It also makes observer capability and controlled illumination part of meaningful appraisal.
For an activewear approval record, define rather than assume:
- the primary and secondary light sources relevant to the brand’s end use;
- viewing cabinet or controlled area and maintenance status;
- sample orientation, distance, background and masking;
- whether the specimen is single layer, folded to opacity or backed in a defined way;
- conditioning or moisture state when relevant;
- observer authority and any color-vision/training requirement;
- how long samples are exposed and whether optical brighteners or fluorescent effects require additional controls.
“Looks fine in the office” is not reproducible. Natural window light changes with time, weather, glass and surroundings. A controlled cabinet does not guarantee the consumer will see the same color everywhere, but it gives buyer and supplier a common decision condition.
Instrumental color difference: specify the method, not just “Delta E”
ISO 105-J03:2009, confirmed current, gives a method for calculating color difference between two textile specimens of the same material measured under the same conditions using ΔE CMC and permits a maximum tolerance tied to the closeness of match required for the end use.
That scope matters. Do not compare a ΔE number from cotton against one from shiny polyester, or a CIE76 result against CMC or CIEDE2000, as though the values mean the same thing. Before putting an instrumental limit in a PO, agree:
- the method and edition;
- target and specimen identity;
- color space/difference formula and parameters;
- instrument geometry, aperture and specular/UV settings where relevant;
- calibration, conditioning, layers/backing and measurement orientation;
- number and location of readings and how they are averaged/reported;
- overall tolerance plus any required lightness, chroma or hue direction;
- whether visual and instrumental decisions must both pass;
- what happens when one passes and the other fails.
There is no universal Linked Sourcing “activewear ΔE.” A tolerance appropriate for a same-lot black legging set may be inappropriate for fluorescent trim, a heather, a mesh overlay, a printed gradient or two different substrates carrying one marketing color name.
Check color inconstancy and metameric risk under relevant lights
Two specimens can appear to match under one light and separate under another. ISO 105-J05:2007, confirmed current, provides an instrumental method for estimating how the perceived color of a textile specimen changes when the illumination changes.
For coordinated activewear, review under more than one agreed relevant light when the use case requires it. Typical risk increases when:
- top and bottom use different fibers or constructions;
- main fabric, mesh, elastic, lining and thread use different colorants;
- one surface is matte and another lustrous;
- optical brighteners, fluorescent pigments or reflective elements are involved;
- different mills or dye processes supply components;
- store, daylight, studio lighting and camera content all matter.
Do not promise “zero metamerism” without a defined method and requirement. Record the illuminants and the acceptance decision for the actual material combination.
Bulk shade approval must happen before uncontrolled cutting
An approved lab recipe may still produce bulk variation because scale, water, machinery, process conditions, finishing and material lots differ. Build a bulk release plan.

For matching leggings and bras, state whether pieces must match as a set and whether different fabrics are expected to achieve a visual match or an intentionally coordinated contrast. A shared color name alone is not a set-matching rule.

The final garment inspection should still check panel-to-panel shade, barre, wrong color, lot mixing, stains, prints, trims and set coordination. Use the AQL 2.5 activewear inspection checklist to define the actual lot, sampling plan, defect classes and decision rules instead of treating AQL 2.5 as a permitted defect percentage.
Shade match and colorfastness answer different questions
A fabric can match the approved target on day one and still rub color onto a pale lining, fade in laundering or change after pool exposure. It can also miss the target while having excellent fastness. Keep color identity and performance evidence separate.
ISO 105-A01:2010, confirmed in 2026, provides general principles and limitations for textile colorfastness tests. ISO 105-X12:2016 covers resistance to rubbing off and staining other materials in dry and wet rubbing conditions. Neither sets one universal activewear pass grade or replaces other end-use methods.
Depending on the garment and destination, the written plan may separately cover:
- dry and wet rubbing/color transfer;
- laundering color change and staining;
- perspiration;
- light exposure;
- chlorinated pool or seawater exposure for swimwear;
- sublimation, migration or heat effects;
- print, logo and contrast-component behavior.
State the exact method/edition, specimen and color/lot coverage, treatment condition, grading method and pass criteria before testing. Turn TikTok and Instagram color signals into controlled products
TikTok’s official Trends tool, updated in July 2026, can show hashtag trendlines, related videos, audience insights and regional popularity. Instagram’s official Insights guidance describes performance information available to business and creator accounts.
Use them to form a dated hypothesis—not to choose a dye recipe from a video frame.

Platform reach does not prove conversion, return rate, size demand, repeat orders or colorfastness. If speed matters, selecting a current Ready Style color may be more reliable than starting a custom dye program. If differentiation matters, protect the lab dip, PP, bulk shade and test gates instead of removing them to meet an announced social date.
