Short answer: a decision-ready golf polo is a body–collar–placket–movement system, not a blank shirt with a logo. Specify the wearer and use, body and garment measurements, fit intent, shoulder/armhole/sleeve architecture, body fabric, collar construction, collar stand or neckline attachment, placket and closure, hem and vents, decoration, care, test evidence and exact public claims. Then approve the complete garment before and after care in risk-representative sizes and colors.
“Performance polo,” “tour fit,” “four-way stretch,” “stay-flat collar,” “anti-odor,” “moisture-wicking,” “breathable,” “wrinkle resistant” and “UPF 50” are not construction specifications. None proves an unrestricted swing, a collar that never curls, a placket that never gapes, a shirt that stays tucked, or performance for every wearer and condition.

First identify the product—the word “polo” can hide different systems
Retail names are useful navigation labels. Replace them with drawings, a BOM and measurements before requesting a quotation.

A tennis polo, uniform polo and lifestyle polo can share visual cues but have different movement, heat, care, branding and durability requirements. Do not change the use label without reviewing the specification.

“Premium wrinkle-free tour polo” is not enough.

The bill of materials should identify the exact body fabric, collar/under-collar or rib, collar stand, interlining or support component, placket layers, button or snap, zipper and puller where used, thread, neck tape, cuff, label, transfer, embroidery backing and packaging. “Polyester spandex polo with custom logo” cannot freeze production.
Separate eight evidence layers
Different evidence answers different questions. Do not convert a useful result into a broader claim.

ISO 8559-1:2017, confirmed current in 2026, provides anthropometric measurement definitions. ISO 8559-2:2025 covers body-dimension indicators for clothing size designation. ISO 18890:2018, confirmed current in 2024, defines main garment measurement points and allows parties to agree additional points. None supplies a universal golf-polo ease, collar height, placket length, sleeve angle, body length or swing-comfort threshold.
Start with the golfer and use—not a fabric feature list
The same polo does not automatically suit a humid tournament, a resort shop, office-to-course wear and repeated team laundering.

Fit the polo in address, backswing and follow-through—not only standing
A polo can look clean in a front photograph yet bind across the back, climb out of a waistband, rotate at the collar or gape at the placket during movement.

Use a club only in a safe, controlled space and define the sequence; a club is not required if the same repeatable body positions can be reproduced safely. Record size, body measurements, underlayer, stance, views, repetitions, care state and pass language. Do not infer athletic performance from one influencer swing.
Fabric stretch is not swing freedom
ISO 20932-1:2018, with Amendment 1:2021, describes strip or loop methods for fabric elasticity and related properties. It excludes narrow fabrics. A result can help qualify the exact body fabric, but it does not measure shirt fit, seam extension, armhole geometry or golfer comfort.

For Full Custom, approve the chosen fabric and the sewn garment together. For Ready Styles, the block and fabric stay as offered; selecting a larger size to solve one movement problem can create collar, shoulder or length problems elsewhere.
Build a body chart, finished measurement chart and movement record
Do not mix body measurements with finished garment dimensions.

Each point of measure needs a diagram, endpoints, measurement path, garment state, base size, grade rule and tolerance. A factory cannot reproduce “same fit as sample” if the sample, measurements, fabric and care state are not traceable.
Collar construction is an architecture—not a “premium” checkbox
The collar system includes the visible collar, its underside, edge, points, center back, neckline attachment, stand/band where used, support layers, topstitch, collar stays or other components and the interaction with the placket.

“Knitted collar” is ambiguous: it can mean a separately flat-knitted/rib component, a collar cut from knit body material or simply a collar on a knitted shirt. Name the orderable component and drawing.

“No curl” needs an appearance protocol
No universal collar material guarantees zero curling through every wash, tumble, steam, packing condition and consumer habit. Collar roll can originate in component imbalance, knitting, cut orientation, seam tension, turn of cloth, support layer, heat/fusing, body-to-collar shrink mismatch, care or storage.
Use ISO 6330:2021 to define domestic washing and drying procedures where applicable. The current published ISO 15487:2018 provides a method for assessing the appearance of apparel and other textile end products after domestic washing and drying; ISO lists a revision in development in 2026, so record the exact edition instead of silently switching methods.

Do not report “collar passes ISO 6330.” ISO 6330 supplies wash/dry procedures; the buyer must still define the property, assessment and limit.
The collar and body must survive care together
A rib collar and body can differ in yarn, construction, dye route, stretch and dimensional response. A self-fabric collar can still behave differently because it has extra layers, seams, interlining and directional cuts.

Placket architecture controls structure, gape and bulk
“Three-button placket” says almost nothing about construction.

Placket gape is a fit problem and a construction problem
Gape can come from insufficient chest/bust ease, button spacing, placket length, support, body stretch direction, closure operation, shoulder/armhole strain, grade or movement. Adding one button can reduce a visible opening yet create a new tension line or make dressing difficult.

For women’s or shaped blocks, validate across target bust/torso shapes rather than grading a men’s placket assumption. Use respectful fit language and record the exact fit model data.
Buttons, snaps and zippers need component-specific evidence
ASTM D6644-01(2025) covers tension strength of sew-through flange buttons. ASTM D7142-05(2021) covers holding strength of prong-ring attached snap fasteners. They are different components and questions. Neither supplies a universal polo pass force or proves the surrounding garment will remain undamaged in every use.
For each closure, agree the relevant method, specimen, care state, loading direction, equipment, result and buyer limit. Also perform operational and visual checks on the finished polo. A button can meet a component force requirement while its buttonhole is too small, the placket puckers or the finish chips.
Choose sleeves and armholes as a movement system

Raglan does not automatically provide more movement. A shallow armhole, tight biceps, restrictive seam or unstable fabric can still bind. Likewise, an oversized sleeve can interfere with styling and create fabric bunching. Approve the complete block.
Hem length and side vents must match tucked and untucked use

A “tennis tail” usually describes a longer back hem, but it is not a standard measurement. Define the front/back length and drop. Test tucked stability during the same movement sequence and report it as that protocol—not “never untucks.”
Match fabric construction to the intended polo—not to a fiber recipe
Current Linked Sourcing golf/tennis development references include polyester, nylon/polyamide, elastane blends, recycled-polyester blends and cotton-containing routes. The exact available article, color, construction, performance evidence and minimum must be reconfirmed for each project.

Pilling, abrasion, snagging and bursting answer different questions
ISO 12945-2:2020 specifies a modified Martindale method for resistance to pilling, fuzzing and matting. ASTM D3939/D3939M-26 addresses fabric snagging using the mace route and notes limitations and visual considerations. ISO 13938-2:2019, confirmed current in 2025, specifies a pneumatic method for bursting strength and distension of textile fabrics and applies to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics.

A golf polo can expose the neck, arms and lower body; a fabric result does not protect uncovered skin. Different collars, placket openings, mesh panels and on-body stretch can change the relevant product map.

Run strike-off or sew-out approval on the exact production-intent fabric and color. A dense left-chest embroidery can distort a lightweight jersey that looked acceptable as an undecorated sample. A collar-edge print or transfer can also change curl and stiffness.

Letter sizes do not tell the factory how the shirt grows. Grade decisions may differ by market, fit route and body shape.
