ASTM D3776/D3776M-20(2025) covers fabric mass per unit area and is applicable to most fabrics. Its options distinguish full pieces, full-width samples, small swatches and narrow fabrics. A small-swatch result applies to that sample and not automatically to the lot. Record the option, sampling, selvage treatment, conditioning and units.
ISO 5084:1996, confirmed current in 2025, determines textile thickness under specified pressure. A 420 g/m² compact loopback and a 420 g/m² lofty brushed fleece can therefore have different thickness, drape, air volume and hand.
ISO 11092:2026 measures thermal and water-vapour resistance under steady-state guarded-hotplate conditions. Its public scope warns that the conditions do not represent specific comfort situations and do not set physiological comfort specifications. Do not convert GSM into a temperature range or universal warmth promise.

Terms such as “two-end” and “three-end” are used inconsistently across mills and markets. If they matter, issue a construction diagram or supplier article, yarn positions, machine gauge, course/wale targets, face/back photographs and approved cut swatch. Never accept the term as a substitute for a locked material standard.
Brushing changes the surface, not the fiber declaration. A brushed cotton/polyester back is still the exact fiber mixture installed. Raising may also alter loose-fiber appearance, pilling, shedding, air volume and the behavior of pigment or garment washes. Approve the fabric before and after the complete finishing and care route.

ISO 12945-2:2020 addresses pilling, fuzzing and matting using a modified Martindale route.
