Short answer: do not approve a tank from the phrase “built-in bra.” Translate the product into an outer shell, internal shelf or bra frame, lining, underbust band, elastic, cups or pads, pad pockets and openings, neckline, armholes, straps, back, hem, fabric directions, size/cup strategy, intended support and coverage, fit movements and care state. A shelf can be unpadded. A padded tank may not use a shelf. Two products with the same retail title can have completely different internal architecture.
Support is a finished garment–body–activity result, not the number of layers, elastane percentage, pad thickness or compression hand feel. “A/B cup,” “light support” and “high impact” are also not universal dimensions or worldwide laboratory classes. Define the buyer’s own wearer, size, activity, fit and evidence rules before sampling.

“Built-in bra” is a retail family—not one construction
The visible tank can hide a very simple hanging shelf, a closely fitted inner crop, a separately shaped bra or a knitted compression zone. Write the construction that can be inspected; do not use the headline as the factory instruction.

A purchase specification should state whether the inner structure goes around the full torso or stops at the side seams, whether the outer body and shelf float or are joined, and whether the underbust edge contains exposed, encased, bonded or knitted-in elastic. Photograph the sample inside out and include section drawings.
Map the complete product before discussing support
One change can alter several systems. A lower neckline changes coverage and may expose pad edges. A longer strap can improve access but reduce upper-bust control. A stronger underband can anchor the shelf yet create pressure or make the outer tank ride upward.

Treat the outer tank and the inner support system as connected but separately measurable garments. A beautiful outer silhouette can conceal a shelf that has migrated upward; a stable shelf can sit inside an outer shell that gapes or twists.
Separate four evidence layers
“The sample is 72 cm at the bust” is ambiguous unless the team knows whether 72 cm refers to a body, a relaxed outer garment, a stretched shelf circumference or a pattern line.

ISO 8559-1:2017, confirmed current in 2026, provides anthropometric definitions for body measurement. ISO 8559-2:2025 specifies primary and secondary body-dimension indicators for clothing size designation. ISO 18890:2018, confirmed current in 2024, defines main garment measurement points and allows parties to agree additional ones. These sources help teams name measurements; they do not supply a shelf-bra pattern, cup-volume conversion or support pass value.
Shelf-bra architecture options
There is no universal best shelf. Choose the architecture from the outer silhouette, target body and size range, intended activity, materials, support/coverage position, care route and price.

“Add one more layer” is not a complete correction. A layer can add thickness without improving anchoring, create a different stretch direction, shift the neutral position or make moisture and heat management worse.
Shelf bra, separate bra frame and compression are not interchangeable
Buyers often combine three different concepts in one sketch. Resolve them before quotation.

None of the three earns a support category by construction name alone. Use the separate sports-bra support, bounce, fit and pressure guide when the product will carry an activity or impact-support claim.
Cups and pads: name the actual route
“With cups” can refer to a loose triangular pad, a shaped foam insert, a laminated panel or a molded component. These differ in tooling, fit, coverage, care and MOQ.

Pad thickness is not support. Cup shape is not cup volume across bodies. A left/right pad may be asymmetric, while a reversible pad may need orientation instructions. Record the exact approved physical component, not only “standard removable pad.”
Design the pad pocket as a retention system
The pad pocket has at least three functions: give access, hold the pad in its intended zone and recover after repeated insertion, wear and care.

No pocket location is universally best. Test pad insertion by the actual opening, dry and wet handling where relevant, intended movements, laundering, removal/reinsertion and storage/packing. “Removable” is a user function that must remain usable without damaging the tank.
Underbust band and elastic are load paths—not percentages
There is no universal elastic reduction percentage, width or force for a shelf-bra tank. The correct relaxed length depends on elastic construction, material layers, seam allowance, joining, target circumference, stretch-force curve, size, body, wear duration, activity and care state.

ISO 20932-1:2018, with its 2021 amendment and 2024 confirmation, covers strip or loop methods for fabric elasticity-related properties and excludes narrow fabrics. ASTM D2594/D2594M-21 addresses stretch and growth of low-power knit fabrics and notes poor interlaboratory precision. Neither method automatically describes a narrow elastic, an encased band, finished-garment pressure or support on a body. Select a suitable component method and report the exact conditions; then verify the finished tank.
Straps, neckline and armholes control coverage and access
These visible design features are also structural boundaries. Approve them together, not as three independent styling choices.

The adjustable range needs a measurable minimum and maximum state, and the slider must remain usable after wash. Record where hardware sits on the intended body in each relevant size; a component that is comfortable on one torso length can reach a pressure zone on another.
Build separate outer and inner POM dictionaries
Measure the outer tank without silently compressing or stretching the shelf into the same plane. Then measure the internal structure by its own landmarks and state.

The outer fabric can be soft and drapey while the inner layer provides recovery; the two still have to move, shrink and dry compatibly.

Define support, coverage and comfort separately
A low neckline can meet a buyer’s style brief while providing less coverage. A close underband can feel secure to one participant and restrictive to another. Do not average these different decisions into “fit passed.”

There is no one universal ISO or ASTM test that classifies every built-in-bra tank as low, medium or high support. Brand labels can be useful merchandising language when the brand defines them, but they are not transferable worldwide thresholds. “No bounce,” “perfect support” and “wear without a bra” are especially broad statements that require product-, body-, activity- and market-specific substantiation.
Fit testing must include the inner structure
Use consenting participants and protect images and sensitive body data. Record garment symptoms objectively and allow participants to stop if the test causes discomfort. Do not frame a body, bust size, asymmetry or tissue distribution as a defect.

Diagnose symptoms before changing the pattern
The same symptom can have several causes, and opposite symptoms can be created by the same “tighten it” correction.
